Making a DIY turmeric latte is the way to go when you are craving a warm, healthy, comforting drink, yet you do not want to pay the high price tag most coffee houses are asking.
The health benefits of golden milk, which is what a turmeric latte is also called, are significant, and I enjoy whipping these up in the afternoon on any given workday when I want a little pick-me-up without the added caffeine.
Turmeric FYI – Benefits of Golden Milk
Turmeric is a root and a cousin of the ginger family. It is used in cooking and is a major ingredient in curry powder.
Turmeric’s most active ingredient is curcumin, which is what gives turmeric its yellow color.
Curcumin has been greatly researched, and is known for its anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties.
Researchers are looking at how curcumin can help with inflammatory conditions such as arthritis, ulcerative colitis, and heart disease, as well as memory and neurocognitive conditions like Alzheimer’s disease.

Turmeric, Curcumin, and Cancer
Turmeric is a wonderful earthy spice, and with curcumin being researched for a host of medical conditions, it’s no wonder turmeric has become so popular in recent years.
This article talks about how curcumin, the active ingredient in turmeric, may not only prevent cancer but also stop cancer from growing and spreading.
Curcumin kills cancer cells by several different mechanisms, which makes it difficult for cancer cells to stay alive. And all the while curcumin leaves normal healthy cells alone.
You can take comfort in the fact that, when sipping on my DIY Turmeric Latte, you will be providing yourself with some very powerful health benefits.
Notes About This Recipe
- It is best to sift your spices through a fine mesh strainer. This prevents the spices from clumping.
- Using a whisk is very helpful. A whisk helps to break up any clumps and blend the spices easily.
- Everyone is different so feel free to tweak this recipe according to your own taste.
- Some people use a milk frother to foam up the milk in their turmeric lattes but I don’t. My taste buds are particularly sensitive, and I often get a metallic taste to my lattes when I use one. That said, I do know many people who enjoy using the frother, including my daughters. 😉
DIY turmeric lattes are also called golden milk lattes because of the yellow/golden color the curcumin in the turmeric makes. Be careful not to get this drink on your clothes though because the turmeric definitely does stain!
This DIY Turmeric Latte recipe is super simple to make, we’re talking 5 minutes tops, so it’s great for busy care partners who may not be able to take a lot of time out of the day for themselves.
I also really like drinking this latte in the evening after work, when I want to relax and wind down. It does not contain any caffeine, so oftentimes I will take it with me into my sauna to relax and destress before bedtime.
Handy Kitchen Tools For This Recipe
- a favorite mug that brings you joy to drink out of 😉
- measuring spoons
- fine mesh strainer and whisk – this is important for the spices, to prevent clumps
- milk frother – if you desire
DIY Turmeric Latte Ingredients
- plant-based, dairy-free milk – for this recipe, I like to use a more creamy dairy-free milk like organic unsweetened soy milk or cashew milk but feel free to use any milk you desire.
- a variety of spices like turmeric, ginger, and cinnamon OR, to keep things super simple, my absolute favorite Golden Milk.
- This vegan and dairy-free herbal supplement has the perfect ratios of turmeric, black pepper, ashwagandha, dates, cardamom, and vanilla, so it takes the guesswork out of it.
- When my daughter visited me this summer, she loved this golden milk powder so much that she ordered some of her own right when she got home!
- pure vanilla – I like to use organic and without alcohol
- pure maple syrup – look for brands that are nothing but pure maple syrup, with no added ingredients like sugar and high fructose corn syrup. Maple syrup has awesome health properties, processed ‘maple syrup’ does not.
- black pepper – using black pepper in your DIY Turmeric Latte increases the bioavailability and absorption rate of curcumin by 2000 percent!
optional ingredients you might want to consider
- If you are not using the already-made Golden Milk, and making your DIY Turmeric Latte completely from scratch, then I would also consider using a bit of cardamom. This goes well with all of the other spices.
- Instead of maple syrup, feel free to use a sweetener of your choice, such as honey, monkfruit, date sugar, etc.
DIY Turmeric Latte Preparation
Not much preparation here. Just make sure you’ve picked out your favorite mug, have all of the spices on hand, and perhaps have a clean milk frother if you are using it.
DIY Turmeric Latte Directions
In a small saucepan or microwave, heat the plant-based milk until hot but not boiling. Stir often to prevent burning.
Measure out the Golden Milk, OR the individual spices, and sift through the fine mesh strainer into your mug.
Add a little bit of water, or milk, to the spices in your mug and, using the whisk, stir vigorously until all the spices are combined and there are no clumps.
If using the milk frother, froth the milk until desired consistency.
Pour the hot milk into your mug.
Add the vanilla, maple syrup, and black pepper. Stir until combined.
Enjoy!
How To Store
Turmeric lattes are best to drink right after you’ve made them. That said, you could let your latte cool down, and then pour it over ice if you prefer your DIY Turmeric Latte cold.

DIY Turmeric Latte
Equipment
- favorite mug (preferably one that makes you happy!) 😉
- milk frother (optional)
Ingredients
- 1 1/2 cup plant-based, dairy free milk I like organic, unsweetened soymilk or cashew milk for this latte.
- 1 tsp pure vanilla extract I like organic and alcohol free
- 1 pinch black pepper this increases the absorption rate of curcumin/turmeric.
- 1 tbsp pure maple syrup or according to taste
- 1 tbsp Golden Milk this one is my favorite
OR – spices from scratch (instead of Golden Milk)
- 1/2 tsp ground turmeric
- 1/2 tsp ground ginger
- 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
Instructions
- In a small sauce pan, or microwave, heat the plant-based milk until hot but not boiling. Stir often to prevent burning.
- Measure out the Golden Milk, OR the individual spices, and sift through the fine mesh strainer into your mug.
- Add a little bit of water, or milk, to the spices in your mug and, using the whisk, stir vigorously until all the spices are combined and there are no clumps.
- If using the milk frother, froth the milk until desired consistency.
- Pour the hot milk into your mug.
- Add the vanilla, maple syrup, and black pepper. Stir until combined.
- Enjoy!
Notes
- Use either the Golden Milk powder OR the individual spices, not both.
- It is best to sift your spices through a fine mesh strainer. This prevents the spices from clumping.
- Using a whisk is very helpful. A whisk helps to break up any clumps and blend the spices easily.
- I like to use room temperature water, instead of milk that comes from the fridge when mixing up my spices or Golden Milk. This ensures all of the spices dissolve and combine well.
- Instead of frothing just your milk, you can also wait until the very end to froth your entire turmeric latte. Personally I like to froth just my milk but you can experiment with this process.
